Gerakas: This resort is without a doubt one of the most unspoilt on
the island, offering one of the most beautiful beaches in Zakynthos.
Gerakas Beach is part of the National Marine Park which protects the
endangered Caretta-Caretta turtle and therefore has quite strict
regulations. The beach is manned by environmental groups who advise
tourists of any nesting areas they should avoid.
The bay is protected from the wind by its rocky cape so is a perfect
sunbathing spot even on a windy day. To ensure the well-being of the
nesting sites, there are no water sports on the beach or any facilities
other than a couple of portable toilets. However above the beach
there is a snack bar and taverna. There is also an excellent
information centre on the turtles run by a local eco-tourism initiative.
The accommodation in this area tends to be small cottages thus
maintaining the areas distinctive unspoilt feel. Even if you don't
choose Gerakas as your holiday destination, a day in this fascinating
and picturesque area is a must.
